Welcome to the website of the Fourth Biennial International Sex and Relationships Education Conference. SRE 2009 was hosted in Birmingham, UK on the 7th-9th September, 2009.

SRE 2009 is for anyone from both within the UK and overseas with an interest in, and concern for, sex and relationships education

in its many forms - traditional, values based, abstinence, skill focused, comprehensive
at its various levels - early childhood through to adulthood
in its diverse settings - home, school, workplace, community and
from its numerous sources - media, peers, parents, teachers, practitioners.

Aims of SRE 2009

SRE 2009 will enable researchers and practitioners to share and discuss their work and ideas. Issues for debate include:

What are we trying to achieve through SRE?
What can we learn from each other about innovative forms of delivery?
What education theory underpins (or should underpin) good SRE?
What new ways of working have been tried and are they successful?
How should success be measured and assessed?
How can we best reach out to those who are especially vulnerable?
What ideological and/or practical barriers have been encountered and how can they best be challenged and overcome?

SRE 2009 will work in a multidisciplinary way to explore these and other aspects of effective and respectful sex and relationships education. Specific themes will include faith and culture, rights, the role of parents, life-long learning, pleasure, especially vulnerable groups, modes of delivery and teacher training. Furthermore, during the event an inter-faith forum will consider various approaches and explore some of the barriers to more effective work in the area.
